Block Building – Part 1 – Beggers Blocks (changed)
Option One – Small Units
Main fabric – cut 3 pieces 1 1/2″ x 3 1/2″ (makes one unit)
Background fabric – cut 4 squares 1 1/2″ x 1 1/2″ (makes one unit)
Note: If making the same quilt as shown in the photograph, you will need 12 pieces 1 1/2″ x 3 1/2″ from the main print and 16 pieces 1 1/2″ x 1 1/2″ for the background for each colour.
Use 9 colours and make 4 units from each colour
Option Two – Large Units
Main fabric – cut 3 pieces 2 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ (makes one unit)
Background fabric – cut 4 pieces 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ (makes one unit)
Note: If making the same quilt as shown in the photograph, you will need 12 pieces 2 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ from the main print and 16 pieces 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ for the background for each colour.
Use 9 colours and make 4 units from each colour.
Variation
Use a Jelly Roll – you will get 2 blocks from each strip by cutting 2 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ pieces (total of 84 units based on a jelly roll with 42 prints)
Use a Layer Cake – use only for the smaller blocks as you will not get 6 strips 2 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ from a layer cake. Cutting the 1 1/2″ x 3 1/2″ pieces from a layer cake, you will get four blocks from each 10″ square (total of 168 units based on a layer cake with 42 squares).
My favourite – use scraps and bring to life all of the memories from previous projects into one memory quilt.
Sewing
Don’t forget to use a 1/4″ seam allowance when sewing the strips together.
